Shri Chaitanya Sridhara Sangha

Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhara Deva Goswami Maharaj

He was born in India in 1895 in Hapaniya, Burdwan district, West Bengal, into a respectable Brahmin (priestly) family.
Being born in the holy places where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu manifested his divine pastimes, from a very young age he had a natural affinity for the mission of Sankirtan, the great congregational chanting of the holy names of the Supreme Lord.
In 1923 he began to attend the Sri Gaudya Math (monastic organization for the dissemination of the spiritual tradition Vaishnava) and, in 1926, was formally initiated as a faithful disciple by the illustrious Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Maharaj Prabhupada (1874-1937), founder of the aforementioned Sri Gaudya Math.

In 1930 he accepted the Holy order of renunciation (sannyasa) from his Spiritual Master, who, having recognized him as a most faithful and resolute preacher of the perfect precepts of Gaudya Vaishnavism, gave him the name “Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhara” which means “the Supreme Guardian of devotion.”
He traveled extensively throughout India and preached in Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, and English, spreading the teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu at different levels in universities, seminars, and Sankirtan festivals.
After the departure of his Spiritual Master, in 1937, his confreres, associates, and the public honored him as the most advanced representative of the Sri Gaudya Math, even though he was more inclined to anonymity as a humble Vaishnava.
In 1941 he founded in Nabadwip Dham (Bengal/West India) his Mission to spread the practice of Bhakti Yoga according to the Vaishnava tradition, the “Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math,” which today has centers all over the world.
In 1977, following the departure of the important Vaishnava Master, Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who indicated him as a preeminent example to follow, people from all over the world, no longer only from India, were attracted by his teachings and his sweet, saintly personality, radiating love, warmth, and affection!
Srila Shridhar Maharaj departed from this material world in August 1988 and even in old age he tirelessly gave his profound lectures for hours and was a source of energetic and divine inspiration.
Numerous are his publications of books, commentaries, and devotional poems. His unique style was able to shed new light on the deepest philosophical and theistic explanations.
Special was his ability to represent these thoughts in the English language. From the recordings of his talks, numerous books have been published and distributed all over the world.
The style of his writings is very sweet, highly poetic, and testifies to a deep understanding of the science of God-realization.
He was respected and loved for his divine simplicity and affectionate nature. Moreover, he was able to gently harmonize all oppositions and bring contrasting points of view to the highest synthesis.
